Tommy, a country boy in 1957, has a problem. He has his eye on Lizzie as his dance partner for the Harvest Ball, and enjoys showing off for her on his bike. He takes his time getting to Mike's barn where the guys are all waiting for him to bring the knife for the blood oath swearing off girls, maybe forever. Mike, the leader, starts the ceremony before Tommy can protest. Elliot is Mike's toadie, always giving support and upholding Mike's demands.Stewart, a kids with booger management problems usually sides with Tommy although no one has ever really stood up to Mike. Unsure of the wisdom of their oath, they take off on rough and tumble race to Percy's, their favorite hangout. Soon they encounter Lizzie and her Tomboy friend Sam, whose annoying little sister Lucy, is always tagging along. Tommy struggles to hide his peeks at Lizzie who is peeking back. Mike bullies all the boys to remember the oath. When the girls approach and make themselves available for invitations to the community dance, Mike shuts them down; but his vulnerability is apparent when little Lucy threatens his authority, making a fool of him. Mike and the other boys have places to be and Tommy hangs back.Left alone for a while, Tommy decides to follow the girls into Percy's Store, unsure how to proceed.Percy, and older bachelor sees a peeking Tommy and offers his advice to win Lizzie over with flowers. He is confident that any girl will go for flowers. Tommy has no money unless he sacrifices his greatest treasure. Percy sends Tommy to Fiona's flower shop.Alone in an alien environment, Tommy seeks for flowers for Lizzie. He is unprepared for a friendly Fiona, who seems to know what he's up to right away. She is reminded of the first time a boy gave her flowers and tells Tommy of all the trouble that boy got into when he pawned something valuable just for those flowers for her. She assures Tommy that the flowers may not be necessary. She also bids him to send her regards to Percy. Tommy rushes back to Percy's where he seeks to reclaim his treasure and the girl he likes.Inspired by Tommy's courage, Percy decides it's time to make his move too. Gathering up his homegrown flowers, he does a spit polish on himself and heads out the door, only to realize that the girl he likes already has all the flowers she could ever want. He hands them off and goes to do what he's waited too long to do, empty handed.
